About Broome and the Kimberley

Broome is the southern gateway to Western Australia’s spectacular Kimberley region right on the Indian Ocean's doorstep. From its rough and tumble, romantic pearling history to the cosmopolitan character of Chinatown to the turquoise waters, red sandstone cliffs and the endless expanse of white sand on Cable Beach....the colours and moods of Broome will capture your soul.

Established as a pearling port in the 1880s, Broome boasts a multicultural population made up of the many nationalities that flocked to the shores of Roebuck Bay in the hope of making their fortune from the pearling industry. It was this exciting and often dangerous quest by many colourful personalities for the valuable harvest of pearl shell that has helped forge the character and charm of Broome.

As a result of this cultural fusion, an unusual style of colonial / Asian architecture has developed, and this is evident in Broome's bustling Chinatown. The town's multicultural society ensures a wonderful mix of gourmet cuisine, colourful characters and distinct cultural influences.

Being situated on Dampier Peninsula with Roebuck Bay on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other, the climate is semi-tropical with two distinct seasons - “wet” and “dry”. The wet season, October - March, is warm and humid with cooling sea breezes, usually in the afternoon.   Rain can be expected from December to March.   The dry season, April - September, gives magnificent weather with clear blue skies, warm pleasant days and cool nights.   It rains very little during the dry and outdoor activities can usually be made with certainty.

About Broome and Kimberley WA

The town is easily accessed by several daily jet aircraft services from Perth with links to the other major capital cities and the world.  A first class road provides pleasant driving from north and south and coaches arrive daily.   There are also air and coach links to Darwin.

There is a broad selection of accommodation to suit all budgets, restaurants and cafes and of course, magnificent Cable Beach and picturesque Roebuck Bay provide perfect backdrops for wedding ceremonies.  There is also a choice of venues for outdoor wedding receptions.

Warm sunny days and romantic balmy nights make it very easy to slip into "Broome Time"… and of course, no visit to Broome is complete without the unforgettable experience of taking in a sunset over Cable Beach.

For the more adventurous, cruise the Kimberley coastline, like the Crocodile Hunter has done recently on TV, with North Star Cruises aboard the luxury 35 metre True North with on board helicopter and dive the pristine coral reef atolls where few divers have been before.
